Hi all, DS2 is a month old today and I just realized I haven't seen him smile yet. He's done that sleep-grin thing, but not an awake smile. I know I had seen one by now with DS1. My mom says this is 2nd baby syndrome...everything happens later b/c they get less face time or they're actually hitting milestones on time and you just don't notice b/c your attention is divided. Can anyone corroborate this theory? He spends a lot of time in a baby carrier b/c, well, there's just stuff that needs to get done but we do spend some time doing tummy time and looking around time every day. And Ender is constantly up his nose, so surely he sees enough faces right?

Well, dd is my second and has done everything on par with or earlier than ds. I think some of it is up to the individual child, but I know that on average babies don't smile spontaneously until closer to 6 weeks of age. Some babies are earlier than that and some are later. I wouldn't worry about it just yet.

I've gotten sleep grins from Krieger, but no induced face smiles here yet. Zy didn't start smiling until closer to 6 weeks- 2 months.

I think Katelyn first smiled at 4 weeks, but she is my first. Lots of people comment that it's hard to get her to smile though. I just think she doesn't like them (ie. MIL)

I just had a 6 week well baby check up with Chloe and mentioned that she had a social smile. the pedi said, oh that's great, because that's a two month milestone. Hope this makes you feel better!

As for meeting milestones and different times...I think it probably depends on the child, on how much attention you are paying, and also probably the milestone itself. Chloe isn't old enough for me to tell, but watching my two nephews with older siblings...it seemed that they did some things ahead of time, just trying to keep up with their big sister/big brother.

Also, being in a carrier a lot I think is a good thing for a baby, so I wouldn't worry about that so much!

Piper is my 1st daughter and it took her the longest time to smile and you really had to work on it to get the slightest smile...she is still a tough cookie to get smile on some days and she will be 14mths old tomorrow!

I just chalk it up to her personality!
