So we've started. I have no idea what I'm doing but Brady asks to go "Poopoo on the potty" all the time so I sit him down. He hasn't actually done ANYTHING on the potty yet but he's pretty proud of himself! He does like to pull a bunch of toilet paper off the roll and wipe himself when he's "all done"! Although, he seems to think he needs to be completely naked to sit on the potty! What the hell is going on at daycare I wonder?!?

Any advice would be welcome. Should I be sitting him on it periodically or just when he asks?

YAY Brady!! :hurray:

When Alayna was first interested in the potty. I would let her try to go whenever she asked. She would never actually go pee and it became a game  I then had to tell her going on the potty is not a game and is only for big girls so if shes not ready to be a big girl, no big deal we'll go back to diapers. Within a few weeks it seems she was going on the potty all the time at daycare (every hour) and doing pretty well at home too. Then she stopped going at home. I didn't push it since she's only 26 months now. Over the past week instead of asking if she needed to go, I say ok it's time to go potty and she goes. She still doesn't poop on the potty but will SOMETIMES finish up on the potty. I did the sticker chart at first and I recently added a piece of candy to the rewards to push her along. She has been in pull ups since 20 months old. I would love to be done with the potty training stage but I know she'll go all the time when she's ready so I try to be patient.
I suggest getting pull ups only when he REALLY takes an interest. Let him go by himself. Allow him to pull down and up his own pull up and wipe himself (then go in after to make sure he's all clean. well I guess boys don't really wipe after they pee huh? lol. ok so let him shake his thing himself then LOL don't know how it works for boys  . My sister in law said she only sat her son on the potty for pee a few times then she showed him how to aim standing up. Fruit loops in the potty helps I hear.
Good luck!!

:thewave: WoooooHoooo! Yay, Brady!

When I worked in the 2 year old room at daycare, we took the kids potty/changed diapers every 2 hours. If they were potty training at home or showed a lot of interest, they sat on the potty each time. Honestly, I don't think taking them more often trained them as much as we were trained to do it, but

With Audrey, I pretty much just take her when she asks, though that is pretty often now. I know she's getting closer because often when she asks to go, she has just peed in her diaper. I sit her on the toilet anyway and sometimes she does more. Actually, now that I think about it, she has gone pee in the potty more often the past few days than she was before. She's always been backwards in my opinion because she pooped on the potty long before peeing on it and at this point almost refuses to poop in her diaper. I'm not complaining, but most kids get the pee part down first.

Anyway, my plan is to keep taking her when she asks and to start taking her at key times (i.e, when she gets up, before & after nap, and before bath/bed.) Also to take her before we leave the house to go out. At this age I don't think there is any reason to rush it, just follow his lead. Good luck!

Thanks girls!

I am trying to just follow his lead. I really am in no hurry to potty train him. I know that sounds awful, but we have friends that are potty training their 2 (but almost 3 year old) and it's such a nightmare when we go to the zoo or out to the park because they have to stop everything and dash to the restroom everytime she asks to go potty. It's so much easier to just let him go in his diaper and change him at MY convenience!

I am such a bad mother....

Cat, if you are a bad mother then so am I! If MIL had her way, Emily would have been potty trained by the time she was one!
Emily has always been interested in the toilet, but her interest in sitting and trying comes and goes. I just figure if she's not into it, it's going to become a big power struggle, and that's not good. And if she can't get her clothes off and on pretty much by herself, the it's not that different than me changing her diaper. It'll come. I've never known any of my school kids to go off to kindergarten in diapers!!

Going out has been a challenge since we started potty training and I sometimes wish I could tell Audrey to just go in her diaper, but that would be counter-productive at this point. She has asked to go potty while out and about a few times, and each time she has done something on the toilet. Most of the time at this point, though, she doesn't say anything and I don't ask. I change her when I can. I know that will have to change eventually and we will have that nightmare where we're rushing off to the nearest public restroom. I don't look forward to it. I sometimes wonder if I were just more proactive about it if she would finish training fairly quickly. Then I wonder if I push too hard if we'll get into a power struggle or she'll have a setback.
